Lots of information here about news and events in St. Mary’s over the last few months……….

Basketball with Stephen, our coach, continues for classes on Wednesdays from 1.00 to 3.00pm. Stephen has lots of experience with both children and teenagers/adults and works with Rip’nRun. All classes from 2nd to 6th will get a number of coaching sessions with Stephen during the year. Our Senior Team compete in local and regional competitions, meeting up with teams from other schools in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght. It is great to see how much the children’s skills have improved over the last number of years and many keep up their interest in basketball as they move to secondary school. Marian College ( where many of our boys go) in Ballsbridge, have a fabulous new Sports Complex where National League games are played and the local club UCD/Marian train.

We are delighted once again, to work with Elaine Chapman from ChappieFit. Elaine works with all classes honing their dancing skills and providing an opportunity to develop their fitness! Elaine also works with our parents, taking a group running weekly and providing an exercise class. ( if you are interested, talk to Liz Gaire, our HSCL teacher).

Eabha is back with us once more, taking Dance/Drama classes with all age groups. Eabha works with the children developing their confidence and self esteem. It is amazing how creative they can be!

Thanks to Ms. Ryan, Ms. Regan and Ms. Mc. Manamon, the children took part in the Dublin Schools’ GAA league from September to December. Training was in Herbert Park and home matches in Clanna Gael GAA club in Ringsend. Anyone interested in joining Clanna Gael should talk to Ms. Ryan and she will give contact details for team conveners in the club.

Training for 2nd to 4th classes has resumed on Monday afternoons in Herbert Park. Lots of the boys and girls are going to the sessions.

Swimming classes for all take place in Mespil Pool on Mespil Road….just along the canal and within easy walking distance from the school. All classes from 2nd to 6th attend 8 weeks of swimming. We have three excellent and experienced coaches. Many of the children also attend public hours in other local pools ( details of pools from Liz Gaire HSCL teacher).

This year, we look forward to welcoming back Kenny from Leinster Rugby who will work with the senior classes. Usually, this module culminates with a rugby blitz with local schools. Many of the boys also play in local rugby clubs.

Our very successful Chess club continues under the expertise of our wonderful chess teacher ( and former teacher in St. Mary’s before his retirement), Mr. Peter Lynch. Mr. Lynch runs chess classes/leagues every afternoon for all classes from 2nd to 6th. Boys and girls from 3rd to 6th classes are playing in class leagues. We also play at representative level and are All Ireland Checkmate Champions for the last three years in a row!

February 2019

We are delighted to inform you that our Senior Chess team of Benjamin, Yubo, Noah, Yanbo, Daniel, John, Unai and Cian, are now Leinster Senior Chess Champions, also for the third year running. Our subs Charan, Cathal and Jasper are also working with the team. They will now take part in the All-Ireland senior chess competition once again. We are so proud of our team! Well done to all the boys for their commitment and enthusiasm!

Chess Feb 19

We cannot thank Mr. Peter Lynch enough for all the work he does in our Chess Club. Our boys and girls are reaching such a high standard of chess.

Many of our pupils are also playing in a local club under the expertise of Alex Baburin, a chess master. If you are new to the school and would like to play chess, please let your teacher know and Mr. Lynch will get you started!

5th and 6th classes get many opportunities to work with the wonderful staff of Trinity College’s TAP programme which is designed to introduce young children to college life and to encourage attendance there in the future. This year’s 6th class and their teacher Mr. Kevin Moran worked with artists, writers and editors in conjunction with Trinity College to complete the TAP ‘Bookmarks’ programme. Over a period of six weeks, the boys wrote their own books under the theme of ‘Creatures and Creations’. This involved careful planning, numerous drafts and many incredible illustrations. At the end of the programme, the class launched their books in the world-famous Long Room in Trinity College where they remained on display for the Easter break. The boys were rightly proud of their wonderful books and enjoyed the chance to show them off to their parents.

Congratulations to Benjamin in 5th class on his wonderful achievement recently in the AIPO awards.

Benjamin competed in the AIPO National Finals in DCU  and came second in the junior section receiving a silver medal.  He was the youngest competitor, as all the other competitors were in secondary school. He is very pleased with himself as both the juniors and the seniors were given the same mathematical/algorithmic problems to solve and he did very well.  We are so proud of Benjamin! Well done!

This is an annual competition for Irish secondary students sponsored by DCU and Fidelity Insurance. The top 4 winners in the senior section (aged 15+) will get intensive training in DCU, prior to representing Ireland in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), which is taking place this year in Japan.

We are so proud of Arran O’Halloran Smith in 3rd class who is a talented artist. Arran has had much success in the annual TEXACO CHILDREN’S ART COMPETITION.  This is a copy of this year’s entry…I’m sure you agree that we should look out for this name in the future!

This year, 2018, is the centenary of the year women were first allowed to vote in elections. To celebrate this and to honour famous women from many ages and countries, Ms O’Flynn in 3rd class led an initiative to encourage all classes to do projects on Famous Women. Some of the women included are Grace O’Malley, Coco Chanel, Helen Keller, Mary Mc Aleese, Cleopatra, Annalise Murphy, Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, Sonia O’Sullivan, Constance Markievicz, Malala Yousafzei, Veronica Guerin, Mary Robinson and Agent Fifi. DO YOU KNOW WHAT ANY OF THESE WOMEN ARE FAMOUS FOR?? Come and visit our corridors and classrooms and read the projects by the children. At the end of this module, the children visited each other’s classrooms to present their work to their friends. This was part of our School programme on Speaking and Listening.
